Train to Warnambool 3, originally uploaded by espeedy123.

Our first stop in Australia was Melbourne, situated in the Southeast on the coast. They say it like this: “Mel-buhn.” I think now we are used to it but it was quite awkward at first.

One of the main attractions near Melbourne is the Great Ocean Road, which runs along the coast and ends near Melbourne. We took a train from the city to the starting point, a place called Warnambool.

The most remarkable part of the train ride was just how unremarkable the scenery was. That’s not because it was necessarily dull (although many would probably say that), but rather because it is so similar what it looks like around my hometown, Amarillo, Texas.

I looked up the latitude and Melbourne is 37 degrees South, and Amarillo is 35 degrees North.
